Sadikshya Shrestha crowned Miss Nepal 2010

Sadikshya Shrestha, 19, has been crowned Miss Nepal 2010, Wednesday. Shrestha was chosen from among 18 finalists at the contest held at Army Officers' Club, Tripureshwar. Sahana Bajracharya has become the first runner up while Samyukta Timsina has become the second runner up in the contest. The contest was jointly organised by Kathmandu Jaycees and Hidden Treasure. Miss Nepal 2010 will also be a goodwill ambassador for Nepal Cancer Relief Society and World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Nepal. According to the organisers, Miss Nepal 2010 will be offered a Chery QQ3 car along with cash prize of Rs 50,000. Similarly, the first runner-up will get a 125 CC Mahindra scooter and cash prize of Rs 35,000.

A senior member of Limbuvan State was arrested from Jhapa

Police on Friday arrested a senior member of Limbuvan State Force, an armed outfit involved in a daring attack on a police station in Ilam three weeks ago. Netra Nemwang, 31, spokesperson of the underground outfit fighting for a separate Limbuvan autonomous state in few districts of eastern Nepal was arrested from Dharampur of western part of the district today. According to the District Police Office, Nemwang, who is also the party's military commander, had planned the attack on the police station in which couple of policemen were also injured. The outfit's cadres had also taken away guns and ammunitions from the police station following the attack. Police said they will initiate legal action against Nemwang by charging him of illegal possession of weapons and robbery. Police said Nemwang has already confessed to his involvement in the attack on the police station.

Police have arrested two persons including a former Maoist combatant from Myadhpur Thimi municipality-5 in Bhaktapur Wednesday in possession of explosive materials. Those arrested have been identified as Sanu Kaji Baruwal of Sindhupalchok and Rajesh Thami of Dolakha. Acting on a tip-off that they were hiding large amount of explosives, a team of police from Bhaktapur Police Range arrested the duo this afternoon. Police recovered large amount of detonators, gelatin (used for making explosives) and other bomb-making materials from them. A letter pad belonging to Janatantrik Morcha and donation receipt were also found in their possession. It was not known for what purpose were they storing such a huge amount of explosives.

Oman Air to connect Kathmandu with Muscat from today


Oman Air will start its Kathmandu-Muscat service from Thursday. The national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman will fly to Nepal as its 40th destination. The service is expected to bring more tourists from the Gulf along with expansion of trade and investment in Nepal. Oman Air will be operating Boeing 737-700 aircraft with business and economy class seat configuration. It will provide onward connections to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai in the UAE, the GCC and Europe. The official operation of the airline, however, would start by the end of September. The airline currently operates direct flights between Muscat and major Gulf destinations like Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh and Kuwait. Moreover, Oman Air flies to 10 destinations in India — Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Bangalore, Kozhikode and Jaipur.

Police seize 4.299 kg gold in Birgunj

Police have on Thursday seized gold worth Rs 10.37 million which was being smuggled into Nepal from Bihar, India through Birgunj Customs Point. A revenue patrol deployed from Birgunj Customs Office to control smuggling of goods confiscated 4.299 kg of gold, which was hidden under the seat of a car (BA 7 Cha 6344) to illegally bring to Nepal. The revenue patrol team led by its chief Krishna Koirala arrested the driver of the vehicle Arbinda Singh, resident of Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan City along with Amit Daruka and handed them over to Birgunj Customs Office for necessary actions. The police succeeded to seize the said amount of gold and golden jewelries as they acted on a tip-off. Meanwhile, Armed Police Force personnel seized sugar, chemical fertiliser and other food products worth Rs. 200,000 that was imported illegally in Nawalparasi from India. According to state-owned news agency RSS, a patrol team of Parasi-based border security office seized 50 sacks of urea, sugar and other food products brought on bicycles evading custom tax. Superintendent of Police Madhu Krishna Godtaula told RSS the materials seized from the border areas have been handed over to Bhairahawa Customs Office for further action. The import of sugar, chemical fertilizer, clothes, poultry products and other food products from Indian markets have been banned in Nawalparasi since a long time.
